Applying Virtual Reality Technology to the Management of Complex Business Information
Dror Segal, Senior Technical Director, New Technology and Systems Management, SIAC/New York Stock Exchange
The powerful potential of virtual reality technology for the management of business applications was demonstrated with the launch of the New York Stock Exchange’s Three-Dimensional Trading Floor (3DTF) in early 1999.  The 3TDF, a key component of the NYSE’s 10-year, $2 billion investment in technology, was produced by SIAC under the leadership of Project Manager Dror Segal.  This computer-generated model of the trading floor’s physical and information space has revolutionized the way in which the NYSE monitors and responds to systems- and market-related activities.  Its combination of real and virtual space in real-time has revolutionized the standards and scope of 3D applications for eBusiness.  By integrating real-time data feeds from multiple systems, the 3DTF allows simultaneous data mining and refining, giving NYSE operations staff an understanding, as well as a knowledge, of events taking place on the trading floor.  The 3DTF takes visualization technology to new heights, proving its practical value as a comprehensive tool for managing facilities, systems and business processes.  In his presentation, Segal will discuss the production process SIAC developed for building real-time 3D models and the NYSE management processes that have benefited from the 3DTF.  He will also discuss the next steps planned for the 3DTF and possible applications of similar technology in other complex business environments.

E-vailability Management-2000 and Beyond
Bob Beauchamp, Senior Vice President, Product Management & Development, BMC Corporation
The evolving, chaotic world of e-business presents new challenges in application availability & performance. Increased service demands require that application management systems maintain a superior level of End-to-End Response time. Unfortunately, current service levels are falling short of user expectations. Today application management systems are developed using a technology based approach -- service level management requires that this model change. In his E-vailability Management presentation, Mr. Beauchamp proposes a Desired State approach where user demands drive the development of technology to meet and exceed service level requirements.
