Cloud Computing Summit
February 3 2009, San Diego, CA
Objective of Meeting
Cloud Computing brings the promise of allowing deployment of scalable
business services with little or no capital investment, access for a
mobile workforce, and low IT maintenance costs; but it brings with it
concerns about manageability, security, and control of intellectual
property. Can Cloud Computing meet your business needs?
Have you a clear understanding on how your business can make safe and
secure use of this potentially hugely cost-effective new computing
resource?
In San Diego, The Open Group kicked off what is expected to be an
ongoing series of events developing an enterprise perspective on Cloud
Computing. The focus of this event was presentations and discussions with
industry leaders on Cloud Computing including invited speakers from
Amazon, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Salesforce.com, and Sun.
Summary
The presentations referenced below are freely available only to
members of The Open Group and conference attendees.
PANEL: Interoperability and Portability for Cloud Computing Ndu Emuchay, Senior Technical Staff,
IBM
PANEL: Migration to Enterprise Cloud Computing The presenters were joined by Ndu Emuchay and Bob
Marcus (SRI), in an animated Q&A session which was moderated by
David Linthicum.
Outputs
The presentations were delivered by representatives from major Cloud
services providers, who described how quickly their Cloud business is
increasing, and how they have responded to enterprise business demands for
sound and secure business controls. Their effective management and
security solutions compare well with, and often exceed, those of their
customers' own organizations. They also provided insights into their
continuing development activities to improve these controls, which they
recognize are critical to assuring customers that their Cloud services are
safe, secure, and well managed. The challenging questions in the panel
session confirmed this commitment.
The presenters all provided participants with a wealth of
experience-based insight into the current state of Cloud services, and
reassurance that the Cloud is maturing towards becoming enterprise-ready.
However, every enterprise should take care to understand fully the
business cases for how they expect to leverage the benefits that Cloud
Computing offers, before venturing into it.
