SOA Governance in Practice - a Case Study at BP
This presentation provides a case study of a real world example of SOA governance in practice, and draws comparisons with the work on SOA Governance and on the use of TOGAF for SOA that is being done within The Open Group.

SOA brings many business benefits to British Petroleum (BP), but none as important as the capability for the company to respond rapidly and effectively to changes in business processes and to leverage those changes to obtain competitive advantage.

For SOA to be effective in an organisation as large and complex as BP, SOA implementations must follow a standardised method and reference architecture that is governed centrally. The Digital & Communications Technology (DCT) department in BP's Exploration and Production (E&P) segment initiated the E&P DCT SOA Programme as a centre of excellence, to help E&P DCT realise the benefits of SOA by providing advice, guidance and standards to projects.

The E&P DCT SOA Programme has established the following processes, which comprise the E&P DCT SOA Method:

  • SOA Governance - responsible for the overall programme management and its ongoing evolution;
  • SOA Portfolio Management - responsible for service lifecycle management and ownership & funding aspects;
  • Service Architecture - responsible for reference architectures and standards;
  • SOA Project Delivery - responsible for aligning BP's CVP project management methodology to a service-oriented approach;
  • Service Operations - responsible for ongoing operational procedures and support.

Audience:- SOA Practitioners

Key takeaways:-
1. Lessons learned from real world SOA governance 2. Applicability of proposed approach to using TOGAF for SOA
