Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conference The Open Group
Jason Uppal - Chief Architect, QRS, Canada

Jason Uppal Jason Uppal, P.Eng. was the first Master IT Architect certified by The Open Group in October, 2005. At that point, Jason had been chief architect of QR Systems Inc (www.quickresponse.ca) for six years and had been providing senior Enterprise Architecture services since the mid 1990s. He holds an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, graduate degree in Economics and a post graduate diploma in Computer Science.

Jason's commitment to Enterprise Architecture Life Cycle (EALC) has led him to focus on training (TOGAF), education (UOIT) and mentoring services to his clients as well as being the responsible individual for both Architecture and Portfolio & Project Management for a number of major projects.

However, Jason has found that education is only beneficial to those companies who can industrialize the EALC process – staff must be able to implement what they have learned. To that end, he lead a team of java software developers to develop an end to end industrialization product which encapsulates Enterprise Architecture, Portfolio and Project Management, Project Management and IT Services Management processes. Implementing this software product, ITO, (www.itoProcesses.com) permits companies to take full advantage of TOGAF and any other custom processes which might already be in place within their organization

TUTORIAL: SOA Without Pain Using TOGAF
The Message : Delivering Business Strategy using SOA style of Enterprise Architecture

Enterprise Architecture and SOA are two terms that are frequently used interchangeably. This dichotomy has caused confusion and prevented many organizations from making any real headway with either SOA or EA. As a result, the real benefits of these approaches appear to have been lost.

The purpose of this workshop is to define a process whereby the SOA style of Architecture, in conjunction with TOGAF, could be used to develop an Enterprise Architecture Roadmap, thereby defining a pragmatic way forward for a total business value realization from a SOA based strategy.

This workshop is a combination of several Real-Life SOA projects and will highlight following subjects:·

  • Overview of TOGAF and the Business Promise of SOA·
  • Workshop:
    • Definition of Business Opportunity to which SOA style of EA could be used
    • TOGAF Methods to develop EA for a SOA Project
    • Define EA Deliverable
    • Develop Enterprise Architecture Vision for the Project

Enterprise Architects Can Be Developed
The Message : Enterprise Architects can be developed.

Many research and consulting consortiums have struggled to create a precise definition of Enterprise Architecture (EA).  Until you can define EA, how can you define the responsibilities of or the skills required of an Enterprise Architect let alone how to grow these professionals.

Instead of making yet one more attempt  to capture the definition of these terms, in this presentation, I will explore what business values should be expected of an Enterprise Architect and how to develop professionals with the necessary skills for this role.

This presentation is a synthesis of three case studies designed to explore the following key questions:

  • What is an Enterprise Architect RESPONSIBLE for?
  • ·What are the required skills of an Enterprise Architect?
  • What other professions have parallel skills and how are these professionals developed?
  • Can the lessons from these other professions be applied to the development of an Enterprise Architect?
  • ·What is The Open Group doing to develop EAs?
  • What can you, the member organizations do?
