Deriving Services from Data Function Points
The task of clearly identifying services in an SOA environment can lead to "analysis paralysis" if a process-based approach is taken. The "services" identified are usually orthogonal to the components of the current architecture. However, if the architect starts by examining the data using a "data function point" approach (where data is classified as identification, description, and control elements), the derivation of services becomes straightforward. Further, the framework for a Master Data Management program that is congruent with the services is created as a "by product" of service identification. The technology required to use the method consists largely of whiteboards and Post-I™ notes. The presentation walks the audience through the method and describes techniques required for its effective use. The theoretical underpinnings of the method are also presented.

Audience:-
Practicing enterprise architects who are engaged with SOA

Key takeaways:-
1. A new analysis approach
2. Practical tips on incorporating the approach with current efforts
3. Limitations of the approach
