Using a Live Architecture Environment to Control and Optimize Decision Making Across a Complex Portfolio

For any large organisation or programme, balancing the portfolio of capabilities presents significant challenges: continually satisfying customer obligations and expectations, while tracking levels of  service and controlling risk, while continually driving down costs. The problem domain is multi-dimensional and complex, with a large number of moving parts service definitions, processes, change initiatives, systems, … all of which need to be controlled and marshalled. And the capabilities in question will be critical to the effectiveness of the business, such as aircraft availability or oil extraction.
Enterprise Business Architecture (EBA) offers an ideal approach to getting to grips with this problem domain, but only if it is harnessed and deployed as a live environment that is trusted and used interactively across the community of stakeholders.
This session will use a case exercise to present and illustrate how this is being achieved by a major organisation responsible for delivering critical capabilities. Specifically, it will address how:
- An EBA can be harnessed to enable and deliver a large-scale control and transformation environment across business stakeholders.
- The blending of complex structural details with live performance feeds can inform decision making through option identification and assessment.
- Existing frameworks can be exploited, but crucially the architecture is not an end in itself, but is a means to an end, which is business success.
 Richard Whittington is Chief Technical Officer at The Salamander Organization in the UK. Dick is responsible for promoting an innovative architecture-based approach to solution development that is becoming established as a standard in a set of focused markets.
Prior to co-founding Salamander in 1996, Dick lectured on computing at the University of York. During his time there he managed a successful research team addressing innovative project support environments, publishing a number of research papers and books, including Database Systems Engineering (Oxford University Press, 1987), which became a standard undergraduate text within many universities.
With more than twenty years of experience in industry, defence and the wider public sector, Dick's focus combines a keen involvement in method and tool development with programme delivery across a range of corporate clients.

 Jim Bennett leads the management of our customers and partners in the Commercial Sector and prior to this focussed on building Salamander's Project Portfolio Governance Solution offering in the Natural Resources Sector, principally with Shell and BP.
Prior to joining Salamander Jim worked in a variety of Sales and Marketing roles and delivered major IT Transformation Programmes in the FMCG Sector. Also, whilst working for a niche Business Performance Improvement consultancy he led a major Organisational Design Consulting Programme for a UK Multiple Grocer.
