The Open Group Conference - Rome 2010

Taking the Business Decision to Use Cloud Computing
Wednesday, April 28, 2010
9:00 – 10:30

This session will present material that has been developed by the Open Group Cloud Computing Work Group to help executives to take business decisions on whether, and how, to use Cloud Computing.

The presentation will be given by Mark but was created by five members of the Cloud Work Group:

  • Mark Skilton,  Director, Capgemini
  • Penelope Everall Gordon
  • Pamela Isom, Senior Certified, Executive IT Architect,  IBM Global Business Services
  • Deborah Hawley, Senior Information Systems Engineer, MITRE
  • Nayan Ruparelia, Chief Architect , HP

Cloud computing is the subject of intense interest at present, because of the potential for business IT departments to drive cost reduction by using cloud services. But deciding when and how to use cloud is not necessarily easy. The material presented in this session will include:

  • A questionnaire that defines a context and provides questions to help the business community identify the specific issues and opportunities that the Cloud Computing phenomenon may enablein their chosen markets, products and services;
  • A set of business use cases for Cloud Computing, that show how enterprises can gain business advantage; and
  • Models and metrics to help businesses create and measure return on investment (ROI) from Cloud Computing.

Participants in this session will gain a better understanding of whether Cloud Computing could benefit their enterprises, of how to gain that business benefit, and of how to measure the return on their investment in using the Cloud.

Mark Skilton, Director, Global Service Offers, Global Applications Outsourcing, Capgemini
