Software Council
Business Meeting
The Software Council will follow on from the theme set in the plenary session on Monday, looking at the same set of challenges and how the Software Industry is responding or needs to respond. We are pleased to have three excellent guest speakers to assist us in this process.

Note that, by popular demand, the Software Council is moving back to its issue-based agenda. This will not leave time for much formal business or process discussion. There is a short process piece in joint session with the Customer Council during the first half-hour of the day.

The preliminary agenda is as follows:

08:30 The Open Group Process Update
Following the workshop session in August, this session will provide the latest status on the process envisioned for driving the development of the IT DiaTone through the Open Group Forums.

10.15 Break
10:30 Electronic Commerce – Stressing the Security Frontier

The concept of electronic commerce has generated almost as much excitement and expectation as the Internet itself. Unfortunately, along with the excitement a good deal of confusion and concern about electronic commerce has emerged, causing a substantial chilling effect on its widespread acceptance and growth. In particular, the need for strong, fine-grained access control and permissions management has never been more pressing, to meet the requirements not only of electronic commerce but also the increasing exposure of mission-critical information over intranets and extranets by corporations worldwide.

In this presentation, we provide a straightforward taxonomy of security needs for intranets, extranets and electronic commerce, define Gradient's role in providing security solutions for the enterprise, and provide examples of Gradient's technologies in real-world scenarios.

11.15 Web Applications for E-commerce

The Internet offers unlimited opportunities for e-commerce, both business-to-business and business-to-consumer. But success with this new platform requires a new kind of application: a web application.

Web applications are much more than forms and a database on the Internet. Web applications combine strong database connectivity, rich content and a high level of security along with built-in communication and collaboration. Web applications make extensive use of Java for expanded functionality and platform-independent deployment.

This presentation will focus on web applications and their role in e-commerce:

  • The four unique benefits of web applications
  • Java vs. HTML for the user interface
  • The expanded role of the database in web applications
  • Security in web applications
  • Server-based agents for customized one-to-one communication
  • How collaboration can amplify e-commerce success
