Andrea Servida
Head of Sector, European Commission DG Information Society - D/4
Andrea joined the European Commission in 1993 and he is now
Head of Sector in the Trust and Security Unit of the Information Society
Technologies (IST) R&D Programme.
His main duty is planning, implementing and managing the R&D programme
on security technologies and applications in areas like identification,
authentication, secure protocols, encryption, privacy enhancing technologies
and, more in general, trust in digital transactions. He also contributes
to the Commission policy-making and standardisation activities in electronic
commerce, electronic signature, data protection, encryption and cyber-crime.
Finally, he holds the responsibility to co-ordinate, at the IST Programme
level, the European Dependability Initiative in Information Society.
His first appointment at the Commission was in the Software Technology
Unit of the programme on Information Technology (formerly called ESPRIT)
where he was in charge of the activities on Database Technology and on
Safety Critical Systems.
Before joining the Commission he worked in industry for nearly eight
years as a project manager of a number of international R&D projects
on decision support systems for environmental, civil and industrial emergency
and risk management.
He graduated cum laude in Nuclear Engineering (specialisation in Material
Science) at Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and carried out postgraduate
studies in Artificial Intelligence at Queen Mary and Westfield College
- University of London – focussing on fuzzy logic and numerical
models of uncertainty and imprecision.
He is co-author of nearly 30 scientific and technical publications (journals,
Conference Proceedings, books, etc.).
