Dependability through
Assuredness
(Wednesday October 21)
Objective of Meeting
This
session was conducted by the Real-Time and Embedded Systems (RT&ES)
Forum.
The
objective of the half-day session on Wednesday was to explore
Dependability through Assuredness in high-assurance mobile environments
and how models, tools, and certification in the Real-time and Embedded
Systems environment might apply to this domain.
Summary
The
Wednesday session was devoted to exploring high-assurance requirements
in the mobile landscape, emphasizing the need for standardization and
certification programs that would assure correct and interoperable
implementations from multiple vendors across many platforms and through
many applications. The presenters and presentations driving the focus of this
session were as follows:
Steven
Venema, the Boeing Company, an excellent presenter and a proponent
of standardization for interoperability, gave a presentation on
Secure Mobile Architecture (SMA) for SCADA applications which will
be extended to other systems like medical devices, manufacturing,
and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ATS).
Joe
Weiss, Applied Control Solutions, a member of the RT&ES Forum
and a consistent and knowledgeable contributor to The Open Group
conferences, provided a very focused presentation on Cybersecurity
and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA). Included in
Joe’s presentation was an appeal to The Open Group RT&ES Forum
for help in solving SCADA-unique security requirements – like
developing Security Protection Profiles and an approach to
Evaluation, Certification, and Accreditation for commercial SCADA
systems.
Joe
Bergmann ended the session with a thank you to everyone who attended
or participated virtually through webinars or conference calls and
encouraged everyone to plan to attend the November 16–18 Forum
meeting to be held jointly with the Security Forum in San Francisco
where these and other topics of the previous two days will be
advanced.
Outputs
Steve
Venema will be attending the Joint Working Session in San Francisco to
discuss how The Open Group can help further current or gap-identified
standardization work, as well as to explore possibilities for profile
conformance programs around SMA.
