- Which version should be translated: TOGAF 8 or 9?
Judith Jones provided an update
on the activities of the ADML Project.
The purpose of the project is to identify the
requirements for an Architecture Definition Language (ADL) for TOGAF
methodology and to identify the ADLs available in the research and
market communities and determine the best fit for TOGAF methodology.
The formation of the Archimate Forum will contribute
to this project.
Future work activities:
- Produce an Archimate and TOGAF alignment report
- Investigate further popular ADMLs and determine their fitness-for-purpose for
TOGAF; any gaps and recommendations on how to fill
those gaps
- Produce an evaluation report
- Identify stakeholders in research and development community
- Determine research specification requirements
- Make research recommendations
Harmonization with ISO 42010 is proposed within this
project.
Terry Blevins provided an update
on the activities of the Certification Standing Committee (CSC) and submitted
the revised charter for the committee for approval by the Forum.
The meeting of the CSC following the full Architecture
Forum meeting addressed a number of significant issues, mostly relating
to publication of TOGAF 9:
-
Target for certification
-
Meaning of conformance
-
Timing
-
Transition
-
Improvements as a result of experience with TOGAF 8
A positioning statement which make clear the
evolutionary nature of TOGAF 9 is under development and will be
published shortly.
Status of TOGAF 8 certification as at July 2, 2008:
- TOGAF 8 Certified: 6187 (5227)
- TOGAF 8 Training: 30 (27)
- TOGAF 8 Tools: 13 (11)
- TOGAF 8 Professional Services: 7 (9)
The growth in the number of individual certifications
continues to accelerate:
Len Fehskens reported on progress
on the definition of Enterprise Architecture.
We need a single operationally useful definition,
ideally for the launch of TOGAF 9.
The working group has not yet reach consensus, but
agreed that the definition of Enterprise Architecture in the latest
draft of the TOGAF 2008 revision is misleading.
The working group will continue to build consensus
around a suitable definition with the objective of having one in place
for the launch of TOGAF 9.
Some observations:
- This definition must take into account the future of
Enterprise Architecture.
- A single definition is unlikely to meet the needs of different
audiences.
- IEEE is now being developed as part of the new ISO work.
Len Fehskens reported on progress
on the Skills Harmonization Project.
The objective of the project is to
harmonize what appear to be competing skills frameworks.
Progress to-date:
Next steps:
- Compare, contrast, and map ITAC, TOGAF US DoD, and IASA models,
for October meeting
- Draft White Paper summarizing results
Bob Weisman reported on progress
on the Information Architecture Working Group
The objective of the group is to address Information
Architecture in a holistic manner for inclusion in a future version of
TOGAF.
Target: Produce a White Paper in April 2009 and
information for inclusion in TOGAF in April 2010.
Chris Harding presented an update on the activities of
the SOA Working Group (see separate report):

co-ordination between the Architecture Forum and the SOA Working Group.
Dave van Gelder reported verbally
on the Business Architecture Working Group.
Since the Glasgow meeting, the group has been working
on models to improve communication. The plan is to bring forward
proposals for changes to broaden the Business Architecture domain in
TOGAF in January 2009.
Andrew Josey brought forward a proposal from the Tele
Management Forum (TMF) for new joint work activity to map between NGOSS
and TOGAF. There is a need for volunteers from the Architecture Forum.
Several companies offered resource.
Architecting-the-Enterprise already has some mapping which they are
willing to contribute.
Severio Rinaldi and Nadhan (EDS) proposed possible
submissions for the 2009 revision of TOGAF.
Recommendations were made in the following areas; for
each area, the presentation identified the rationale, implications, and
risk of no action:
-
Expand concepts of IT Governance
-
Enhance Business Case within Domain
Architectures
-
Enhance Industry Analytics
-
Enhance Management of Change
-
Create a One-page Reference Diagram of TOGAF
Phases and Steps
The Forum encouraged EDS to come forward with more
detailed proposals.
Sasol – Templates and Examples
Peter van Hoof (Sasol) presented
a proposal to submit a series of templates and examples in support of
TOGAF.
Specific templates proposed include:
- Business requirements statement
- Requirements delivery matrix
- Architecture assessment
- Conceptual design statement
- Gap analysis
The Forum encouraged Sasol to embody this material
into a White Paper as proposed.
Architecting-the-Enterprise: BPMN Model for TOGAF
8.1.1
Judith Jones presented a proposal for BMPN modeling
of TOGAF.
Architecting-the-Enterprise has prepared a BPMN model
of TOGAF 8.1.1 and is prepared to submit it to the Architecture Forum
for publication and also as the basis for a TOGAF 9 version.
This work needs to be referred to the Modeling &
Terminology Working Group for cross-validation with other models.
