On Friday July 18 and Saturday July 19, the Working Group
discussed the Practical Guide to
Developing SOA Using TOGAF.
It explored the differences between architecture developments at
the strategic, segment, and solution levels.
It used a worked example of a strategic architecture for a small company
as a vehicle for discussion of how to develop strategic and solution
service-oriented architectures. More work is needed to further develop
understanding of these topics, but very significant progress was made.
On Sunday July 20, the Working Group progressed the work
of its SOA Governance project.
The majority of the material for the document that the project will produce now exists in draft form.
Agreement was reached on how to organize this material,
and on a detailed table of contents for the document.
On Monday July 21 and Tuesday July 22,
there were SOA streams in the conference program.
These included a workshop on SOA and TOGAF
that built on the work done in the meetings on the Friday and Saturday
On Wednesday July 23, the Working Group
discussed its Reference
Architecture project.
It agreed on a classification of SOA Architecture Building Blocks
into nine layers, as described in its base document,
and it agreed on a list of candidate building blocks
to form the basis of Open Group certification programs.
Thursday July 24 started with an open session in which Working Group
co-chair Tony Carrato gave a presentation
describing the Working Group and its projects, and Working Group members
answered questions. This included discussion of the SOA Japan Working Group,
several of whose members were present.
This was followed by a session on how to migrate legacy systems
to SOA, which created an excellent basis for the establishment
of a new project to develop guidance in this area.
The Working Group then received a presentation from
the officers of the Architecture Forum on the work of that forum.
Subsequently, a presentation was delivered by the officers
of the SOA Working Group to the Architecture Forum.
These presentations will enable a greater level of
coordination and co-operation between the two bodies.
The final session on the Thursday was devoted to a joint meeting
with the Security Forum to progress the work of the SOA and Security project.
On Friday July 25, the Working Group had a joint meeting
with the Architecture Forum on Information Architecture,
and discussed SOA input to the Architecture Forum's Information Architecture project
following the work at the previous conference (in
Glasgow) on Information Architecture for SOA.
Then, in the final session of its meeting, the SOA Working Group
discussed the book on SOA which The Open Group is producing
based on the material produced by the Working Group's projects.
Work will continue to produce:
- The Practical Guide to Using TOGAF for SOA
- The SOA Governance document
- The SOA Reference Architecture
- The SOA Security Guide
The potential for Open Group certification programs derived from
elements of the SOA Reference Architecture will be investigated.
The proposal for a project on Legacy Evolution to SOA will be
further developed and a vote will be held to establish the project formally.
The Working Group will contribute to the Architecture Forum's
Information Architecture project.
The main content of the book on SOA will be developed, for review
at the October conference (in Munich), and subsequent finalization
for publication at the end of the year.
