Open Methods and Tools for Enterprise Architecture

Objective of Meeting

  • To provide a public Briefing on the work of The Open Group Architecture Forum and TOGAF, The Open Group Architecture Framework, including the availability of support for TOGAF in tools and e-distance learning.

Summary

The Briefing comprised four separate presentations.

TOGAF and the Architecture Forum -- the Continuing Story

Chris Greenslade of Frietuna Consultants and Chair of the Architecture Forum presented the evolution of the TOGAF framework and its current dual incarnation as a Technical Edition (Version 7) and an Enterprise Edition (Version 8).

Chris also reviewed the role of the Architecture Forum, in which TOGAF is evolved, and described the use of the TOGAF Architecture Development Method as a means of populating the well-known Zachman Framework. [PDF]

TOGAF Tool Support Briefing – Popkin System Architect

Matthew Smith of Popkin Software gave a presentation on Popkin's System Architect tool, explaining the rationale for supporting the TOGAF framework and certifying the System Architect tool under the TOGAF7 Tool Support program.

Matthew also explained in detail the support provided in the System Architect tool for the TOGAF framework. [PDF]

e-Distance Learning for TOGAF  – the Challenge

Judith Jones of Architecting-The-Enterprise addressed the topic of developing a series of e-distance training courses to support the TOGAF framework, including the problems of coping with the increasing scope and level of detail contained in the TOGAF documentation set. [PDF]

IT Architecture Practice

Finally, John Spencer, Director of The Open Group Architecture Forum, explained the wider topic of the Architecture Forum's approach to encouraging the development of a global certification program for the profession of IT Architecture. [PDF]

Outputs

The objective of the meeting was fulfilled:

  • A range of presentations providing an update on the work of The Open Group Architecture Forum and TOGAF; including the availability of support for TOGAF in tools and e-distance learning.

Next Steps

  • Continue to seek feedback on the new TOGAF Version 8 Enterprise Edition, and the requirements for TOGAF support in tools and training, and evolve TOGAF accordingly.
  • Canvass the interest in the IT industry for a wider certification program covering IT Architecture as a professional discipline.
