Distributed Services Semantic Interoperability

Objective of Meeting

The aim of the meeting was to understand the issues affecting interoperability of distributed services at the semantic level, and to explore the possibility of cloud-based semantic services to address these issues.

As boundaries within and between enterprises become more permeable, interpretation of external data becomes an increasing problem. Different enterprises and departments present data in different ways, based on different terminologies and underlying models.

To overcome this problem, and simplify the interpretation of information exchanged by distributed services, we need a standards framework. This will enable generic information interpretation within enterprises, and lead to the development of information interpretation and translation services available on "the cloud" for enterprises to use.

Summary

The meeting discussed the following key questions.

  • What are the principles of use of vocabularies by ecosystems?
  • What are the capabilities – exposed through enterprise or cloud services – that are needed for use of ecosystem vocabularies?
  • What are the standards that apply to use of vocabularies by ecosystems?

Outputs

The meeting developed an output presentation that captured its main discussion points and conclusions.

Next Steps

The discussion and conclusions will be input to the work that may arise from the Rome Interoperability BOF.
