Verena Schmidtmann is currently consultant in the Architecture Strategy group of Detecon International GmbH, a group specialized in implementing Enterprise Architectures in multi-divisional international corporations.

Since completing her PhD on a Web Services-based reference architecture for Enterprise Application Integration (EAI), Verena has worked in various IT strategy projects and projects concerning the implementation of Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) for the head offices of large international corporations. Her present projects include the development of a value-oriented architecture strategy, the definition of an architecture framework for introducing SOA in the Telco production environment, and the build-up of a corporate Architecture Board.

Verena further heads a research project for the development of a controlling model for modular Enterprise Architectures with the special scope on cost and pricing models for an SOA landscape. Recently she has been TOGAF-8.1 certified.

Case Study: Using TOGAF at Deutsche Telekom to develop SOA for Next Generation Networks

Our customer Deutsche Telekom asked Detecon to evaluate the concept of a Service Oriented Architecture for the application plane of Next Generation Networks (NGN), and further to recommend a specific reference architecture for this domain. In the Telco industry NGN forms the future service delivery environment of converged Telecommunication Services comprising of Telco network determined parts as well as an IT-driven application plane. The Detecon team consisting of four certified TOGAF-architects used the III-RM as the basis to develop a reference architecture for the NGN application plane. Detailed analyses of the different reference architecture domains on all architecture layers as well as a stakeholder analyses according to the ADM were conducted to derive differentiated governance principles and a differentiated NGN SOA strategy for each domain. Those strategies were finally subsumed to a value-driven, corporate NGN SOA migration strategy offering an optimized balance between value-creation in the lines of business and for the Deutsche Telekom group as a whole.
