Exposing Legacy-System Functionality as SOA-Compliant Business Logic without Programming
Most companies have significant investments in legacy systems and bear considerable cost for any legacy-system maintenance. While the notion of converting legacy systems into services is appealing, the practical aspects of doing so can be challenging for several reasons:

  • When publishing legacy functionality as a service requires maintenance to the legacy system, already stretched, legacy-system-maintenance resources are expensive and hard to obtain.
  • Seldom are existing legacy-system connections publishable as a service in accord with current web service or other service connection standards.
  • Often, publishing legacy functionality as a service requires enhancement to the legacy functionality that is difficult to afford and do.

TenFold is pursuing a strategy of helping its customers expose legacy-system functionality as a service, supporting such services as web services, and enhancing (adding value to) legacy-system functionality without requiring programming or the involvement of legacy-system programmers.

TenFold and its founders are business applications specialists and are pioneering a model-driven approach that exploits model-driven metadata to specify legacy-system connections (with or without added value) without programming. A model-driven approach offers a tenfold improvement in applications development time and cost as it replaces the traditional requirements-design-develop (program or generate)-compile-deploy methodology with describe-render-publish. A TenFold partner is using the approach discussed in this presentation to expose legacy functionality as a set of services.
