Aslam Raffee is the CIO of the Department of Science and Technology in the Government of South Africa. He is an executive member of the Government IT Officers Council (GITOC), and is the current chairperson of the GITOC Open Source and Open Standards working group. The workgroup released the Government OSS policy document in 2002 and strategy document in 2003. In February 2007 Cabinet adopted the Policy on Free and Open Source Software use for South African Government, which was presented by the workgroup. The workgroup has also made significant input into the latest version of the Minimum Interoperability Operating Standards (MIOS) Handbook for Government. In 2007 he participated in the Government Interoperability Framework working group of the United Nations Development Programme : ADIP.
He has a Bcomm:Management degree from the University of South Africa and is currently studying for a Masters in Commerce: Information Systems at the University of Witwatersrand
