Simon Carpenter, Director Strategic Initiatives, SAP Africa
Simon CarpenterSimon Carpenter is Director Strategic Initiatives at SAP Africa, (Pty) Ltd. This entails responsibility for providing thought leadership on emerging business and technology issues, positioning the company, developing new markets and bringing to market SAP’s latest solutions.

He has 24 years of experience in the IT sector. He has worked predominantly in the area of operations and logistics with solutions ranging from on-board computing and transport management to large-scale ERP and SCM systems. He has broad experience having worked in sales, marketing, support management, project management, consulting and systems development roles. He thus has good insight not only into technology but also the soft issues (such as change management) that must be addressed for any technological initiative to be successful.

In his current role Simon works with a wide variety of leading enterprises which are seeking competitive advantage through the innovative use of Information Technology. In this regard he believes in two facts. Firstly, no matter how “state-of-the-art” the technology is, it is the people whom you lead, empower and enable with the technology who make the business happen. Secondly, technology has to serve the business by adding value. The focus should always be on strategic and tactical business and value issues first and technology second.

Simon is also fortunate to travel overseas frequently and is thus able to keep abreast of international developments that have an impact on the value chain. He has been a guest lecturer on a number of post-graduate courses and public training initiatives. He is also a frequent speaker at conferences and talks on a wide range of topics germane to those enterprises that operate in the logistics and supply chain arenas.

International speaking engagements include delivering a paper on e-business at the APICS Conference in Orlando USA

Presentation
Business Transformation, EA Deployment and Value Realization
The term Enterprise Architecture (EA) is fairly new to the businessman s lexicon and as such carries the potential for confusion and/or dismissal. The situation is exacerbated when one considers both the accompanying technology enablers and their jargon (SOA, SOBAs, MDA BPM et al) and the fact that in many organizations anything remotely connected with IT is left to IT to sort out. In this presentation we will look at EA from the perspective of business. What does it mean for the business? Where does it fit in the planning and business lifecycle? How should business people think about EA and especially the facet of Business Processes which are fundamental to the ability to deliver value regardless of industry, size or scope of the business?

Overall we will show how the concept and practice of EA when intelligently applied to the organization can unlock a continual stream of value and build a core capability to future-proof the enterprise.
