Reorganizing storage management atoms in the universe

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) and Distribributed Management Task Force (DMTF) are spearheading efforts to make IT more productive through a standardized network storage management interface which will improve interoperability in multi-vendor environments.

In this presentation, Roger Reich, SNIA SMI Committee Chair of VERITAS Software, will detail the components of the SNIA's storage management initiative specification (SMIS), and explore the impact its adoption will have on the storage industry and overall IT infrastructure management. He will explain the common information model (CIM) and web-based enterprise management (WBEM) standards that form the basis of the SMIS, and will show how the platform-independent standard will simplify today's complex application management architecture into a single management protocol and transport.

The session takes a long-term view of how storage industry standardization and interoperability certification will contribute to the management of IT as a utility, and examines the ramifications for storage vendor products and the industry market.
