Standardize Architecture Delivery in a Federated Architecture using TOGAF - a case study
Sasol, South Africa’s largest industrial company has a strongly entrenched federated business model. Sasol utilizes a home grown, mature and deeply embedded business project methodology across its many and diverse business units. This project methodology is called the Business Development and Implementation Model (BD&IM). This is not an IT project methodology, and that IT is a mere small component of this comprehensive enterprise project methodology. On the other hand the Sasol Enterprise Architecture Team through its mandated governance committees accepted TOGAF as its de facto architecture framework. The challenge for this team was to align the TOGAF ADM with the BD&IM through appropriate positioning within the stage gates and through the design of the process and the appropriate deliverable templates in order to practically implement this. This process and the deliverable templates are indeed an example of how to standardize architecture delivery in a federated architecture environment using TOGAF.

Standardize Architecture Delivery in a Federated Architecture using TOGAF (continued) – detailed analysis of the process, the templates and supporting architectural content by means of an example
The presentation “Standardize Architecture Delivery in a Federated Architecture using TOGAF - a case study” covered how Sasol, South Africa’s largest industrial company with a strongly entrenched federated business model, has aligned TOGAF with the Sasol BD&IM (Business Development and Implementation Model). The resulting process supported by the deliverable templates is indeed an example of how to standardize architecture delivery in a federated architecture environment using TOGAF. This presentation, building on the previous one, focuses on the process, the deliverable templates and supportive predefined architectural content in more detail. This is done by working through a practical example for a representative project. The templates referred to as the Business Requirement Statement, Architecture Assessment, Requirements Delivery Matrix and Conceptual Design Statements are covered. The role of predefined Architecture Principles, Domain Architectures and Solution Building Blocks is also covered. This presentation will benefit those who are interested in taking an even closer look at Sasol’s Architecture Methodology.
