The SPRITE Program
Support and Guidance to the Procurement of Information and Telecommunication Systems and Services

SPRITE is a European Commission program which focuses on the application, validation, and demonstration of methodologies and tools that support and guide European organizations (both public and commercial) in the procurement of IT systems and services.

The SPRITE Program helps users to make sensible procurement decisions, and therefore to use their purchasing power to the best advantage, through promoting and developing awareness of procurement best practice.

Since emphasis is placed on the procurement of systems that conform to standards (that is, open specifications), the SPRITE Program completes the cycle from specification development, to brand definition, to requiring and purchasing conformant systems.

To date, the SPRITE Program has been extremely well received by users, as it is the first time up-to-date information on procurement practices, together with a whole set of new tools to help users get more value from their IT investments, have been available.

There were four major interrelated SPRITE projects in 1998 on procurement best practice: VALIDATE, ASSIST, PULSE, and TEAM. All four projects were championed by The Open Group. Some 24 user organizations participated in the projects, including members of The Open Group’s European Procurement Forum.

A presentation of these SPRITE projects was made at an Information Day, held in Amsterdam, 19th November 1998. Please note that access to this presentation is restricted to the SPRITE Project Partners.
