QoS/EMF Planning Session

Objective of Meeting

The objective of the meeting was to plan the effective merge of the 2 groups into a single entity overseeing a common set of projects and to plan the next meeting.

Summary

The QoS Task Force and the Enterprise Management Forum have been operating in closely related areas for some time and have been holding joint meetings for the last year or so. Accordingly, it seems sensible to bring the relationship closer together and operate them as a single group.

The session focused on the organizational structure moving forward. In the future the group will have 2 Co-Chairs, Jean Hammond and Karl Schopmeyer, reflecting the 2 threads of activity, and will schedule plenary sessions for the whole group, with individual project sessions operating in parallel where possible.

The projects covered by the combined group are SLAs, the QoS/TMF SLA Handbook, the QoS/Real Time Challenge, ARM, AIC, XSLM, snd Pegasus. A major new activity, provisionally called Application QoS is planned for launch at the next meeting in Austin.

Martin Kirk will be The Open Group Director principally responsible for the combined group. Sally Long will maintain an involvement with the group, but at a lower level.

A name for the combined group has not yet been determined.

Outputs

The output of the meeting was the presentation given at the Forum Reports session on Friday, which includes the draft agenda for the next meeting.

Next Steps

Besides continuation of the existing projects, the major activity during the next 3 months will be the launching of the Application QoS project. The detailed activities will include the production of the project description and the recruitment of a core set of major participants in order to establish critical mass to launch the project in Austin.
