A reappraisal of the overall position of the Challenge meant that the published
aims of the meeting were not achieved.
The Challenge project is about three months behind schedule, and its relevance
was questioned in view of recent market developments.
The purpose of the Challenge is to demonstrate through scenarios and a framework
the use of directory to support roaming in an IP-only, mobile environment.
The Challenge can be extremely relevant, but only if a wider range of participants
are involved. In particular, involvement of Wireless Internet Service Providers
(WISPs) is crucial. Steps were decided on to make WISPs aware of the
Challenge and gain their involvement.
If this can not be achieved then the viability of the Challenge must be reassessed.
Involvement of additional participants will accelerate progress. Nevertheless,
the Challenge team can not at this point commit to a demonstration in July.
It will reassess the situation in March. The likely outcome is that
the team will give a presentation in July and hold the demonstration
itself in October.
There was progress on the Challenge definition and Architecture.
- The Challenge definition was reviewed and no changes were requested.
- A draft of one of the key architecture documents, the Directory Schema,
which had been developed by the DMTF, was presented and received initial
review.
- The underlying assumptions about user context and accounting were discussed.
