Meeting Report

Objective of Meeting

The objective of the session was to explain the architecture of the Secure Messaging Toolkit and demonstrate to participants how to configure popular eMail servers and clients for secure messaging.

Summary

The day started with a brief tutorial on the concepts of PKI and how it is used within the Secure Messaging Challenge from Russ Chung of the American Eagle Group.

The secure messaging team of Russ Chung, Wen Fang from Boeing and Stephan Wappler from Noventum (was Lynx Consulting at the time of the Secure Messaging challenge) demonstrated how to obtain certificates from LDAP servers and configured Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange Servers, and Lotus Notes and Microsoft Outlook clients to exchange highly encrypted eMail.

The day finished with a discussion about how to broaden the use of the Secure Messaging Toolkit and how to integrate it with existing PKI infrastructures.

Outputs

The workshop was not 100% successful and identified a number of areas where the clarity of the Secure Messaging Toolkit could be improved.

Next Steps

The workshop will be repeated and extended at the next meeting in Austin in April, and will be followed by an interoperability PLUGfest in July or October. The possibility of a similar workshop in Europe was discussed.
