Plenary 8:45 - 12:30 We have heard many say that we need to change the perception of architecture – move it from IT and techie speak to a more business-orientated language that directly relates to an organization’s multiple business functions. One way that we will see this in the future is that the conversations will change; from IT centric to business/mission centric, from IT push to IT pull, from hopes of IT ROI to providing proven business improvements, from IT changes to changing business/mission processes, people roles, and policy. In this conference we will propose a future where the conversations in which architects are engaged have changed to conversations where architects are in the “Board Room” and at the decision making tables. We will propose a path to getting there through lessons learned and practices being employed by thought leaders and through recommendations from those already in the “Board Room.”

8:45 - 8:55 Welcome Allen Brown, President & CEO, The Open Group Allen Brown is President and CEO of The Open Group, a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium that works towards enabling access to integrated information within and between enterprises based on open standards and global interoperability. For more than ten years, Mr. Brown has been responsible for driving the organization's strategic plan and day-to-day operations. In addition, he was instrumental in the creation of The Association of Open Group Enterprise Architects (AOGEA), which was formed to increase job opportunities for all of its members and elevate their market value by advancing professional excellence. Prior to joining The Open Group, Mr. Brown managed a consulting firm in London, which he founded in 1987. He enjoyed a mix of financial management and general management assignments, which included advising venture capitalists on investment decisions, and consulting on IT systems design and implementation.  Mr. Brown has been a speaker and panelist at numerous industry events – most recently at Gartner's Enterprise Architecture Summit, SAP TechEd 07, BTELL Enterprise Architecture Conference, Enterprise Architecture 2007 Conference, the FTP Enterprise Architecture Summit, and the Ziff Davis CIO Summit.  He has contributed guest columns on the topic of enterprise architecture to Architecture & Governance, CIO Update, CNET, DM Review and Sandhill.com. Mr. Brown holds an MBA from London Business School.

9:00 - 9:55 Enterprise Architecture: Disappearing into the Business Why are some architects successfully integrated with the business while others struggle to emerge from a technology-centric role? Business process management and other business driven initiatives are sometimes disassociated from existing enterprise architecture functions and yet they are obviously related to the same goal. Why is this happening? More importantly, should we be alarmed? Language, communication, and perception are all part of "Changing the Conversation". Architects must learn to describe architecture's business contribution and value without using EA's secret language. However, that is not the only conversation that must change. EA practitioners must realize that EA has gone through a fundamental change and it will no longer solely exist as an IT competency. The foundations of good architecture are disappearing into the business! He is also the co-chair of Penn State's EA Professional Development advisory team.
