The Open Group’s Real-time and Embedded Systems (RTES) Forum will host a four day session addressing the topic of "High Assurance through Dependable Open Systems Architecture and Modular Components".

Monday February 1st
Monday will offer an Introduction to the Real-Time and Embedded Systems Forum with an updated on current activities – recent and upcoming meetings, new joint initiatives, as well as RTES Forum specific focused work.
The major focus of Monday will be on Formal Methods and Tools for High Assurance Environments.

Introductions and Overview of the RTES Forum – to provide a quick overview for first time attendees and a summary of current work since our last conference. Joe Bergmann

9:30 – 10:30
A focus on the importance of Formal Methods and Tools in architecting High Assurance Environments and in proving through sufficient evidence that these high assurance components and systems behave the way they were intended.

11:00 – 12:30
Landscape presentation of the types of formal methods and tools in use today from a Global Perspective, and which of those methods and tools are being adopted and by whom.

12:30 – 2:00
Lunch

2:00 – 3:30 Drill down into some of the formal methods and tools identified in the previous sessions – which specific methods and tools will be highlighted is still being determined.

RTES Forum Strategy
How can we support the evolution and the market adoption of formal methods and tools?  This session will focus on defining the role of the RTES Forum in this space – whether that is: contributing to standardization of methods, contributing to certification of tools, offering a venue for conformance demonstrations etc.  How can the RTES Forum help deliver the tools and methods that high assurance architects and engineers require?

Tuesday February 2nd

Tuesday will be a full day devoted to Multi Independent Levels of Security (MILS) Architecture, looking at why this is an important component level approach for High Assurance – and what it will take to open up the APIs for standardization and interoperability, and to assess potential market adoption of the MILS Architecture.

Tthis will be a working session in which the members will review and refine the initial market strategy work drafted at the San Diego meeting, with the objective of creating an effective and executable plan for increasing market adoption.

Wednesday, February 3rd

Wednesday will be a full day devoted to architecting solutions for High Assurance and Mission Assurance with particular focus on extending the TOGAF ADM to the platform and high assurance domains.

Presentation and discussion on what it means to extend TOGAF to the Platform and High Assurance Environments.  Recap of TOGAF-RTES Working Group objectives – Ed Roberts

Presentation on a new Mission Assurance paradigm and how it maps to High Assurance environments and requirements

Working Session led by Ed Roberts, to begin evaluating each of the TOGAF ADM Phases to see if they can be applied “as is” to the platform and high assurance environments – or if there are additional requirements, inputs, outputs, steps required in each phase, in order to facilitate the architecting of high assurance or mission assurance solutions.

Tools 
P resentation and discussion on the importance of and the growing demand for automated tools to assist in the architecture of high assurance systems – this will include an overview of the tools being developed such as SYSML Modeling tools (e.g. IBM/Rhapsody, Artisan/Artisan Studio, Magic Draw, others  (not endorsement, just information) and MDA tools (e.g. PathMate, and others)

RTES Forum approach to Tools
Exploring what the role of the RTES Forum is in influencing the standardization, certification, or market adoption of those tools.

This session will be devoted to a Commercial Approach to Evaluation, Certification and Accreditation and will be divided into two parts:

• The Open Group will provide a presentation on the value of proving conformance in high assurance systems and will provide an overview of the continuum of approaches being used in industry today.
• Following the presentation, there will be interactive discussion on what government is demanding and the challenges faced by suppliers in meeting those demands.  And discussion on what we can do to assist industry in facilitating commercial assurance programs that work effectively to meet government demands.

Thursday, February 4th

Thursday morning will feature a multi-forum (RTES, Architecture, Security and SOA) session on extending TOGAF to high-assurance, security and services environments, followed by a joint working session with the Architecture Forum. Thursday afternoon will consist of a Joint Secure Mobile Architecture working group (RTESF-Security Forum) and a wrap-up session that will focus on the Open System Architecture Pocket guide status, and an RTESF business and marketing strategy session to grow membership and increase market adoption of its deliverables.

Joint session with the Architecture, RTES, and Security Forums and the SOA Working Group to discuss objectives and challenges with extending TOGAF in a way that enables domain specific architects such as high assurance architects to readily create high assurance solutions using TOGAF. This session will feature: a White Paper presentation by Ed Roberts on some of the issues with utilizing TOGAF to architect high assurance environments, followed by presentations from the Security Forum and the SOA Working Group on their experience with extending TOGAF to their environments.

10:30 – 11:00

11:00 – 12:30
Continuation of the first morning session with the Architecture Forum to discuss the challenges of extending TOGAF to meet the needs of high assurance architects.  This session will be centered more on digesting the information from the previous joint session (9:00 – 10:30) and working together with the Architecture Forum to address the issues by defining a way forward.

Secure Mobile Architecture (SMA)
This session will focus on a joint effort within the SMA joint working group of the RTES and Security Forums.  This session will feature a brief presentation from Steve Venema, The Boeing Company on what SMA is and why it is relevant in today’s mobile society.  Following that will be a presentation on the working group’s charter, roadmap and deliverable schedule with interactive discussion and definition of next steps to achieve the working group’s objectives.

RTES Forum only session to further explore SMA work items identified in the previous session, which are specific to the RTES Forum members.

Summary of and feedback on the next version of the RTES Forum’s Open Systems Architecture (OSA) Pocket Guide, which offers an executive and management level overview of Systems Architecture, providing a quick look at OSA objectives, terminology and initiatives as viewed from both the government and commercial perspectives. – Lead by Edwin Lee and Glen Logan

4:15 – 5:30
RTES Forum Strategy Session
The session will be interactive and devoted to refining strategic objectives and tactical next steps toward meeting our 2010 objectives. Joe Bergmann and Sally Long will provide updates to the 2010 RTES Forum Execution Plan and we will include discussion on the RTES Forum Wiki, highlighting ownership responsibilities, with some “how-to” instruction for maintaining and evolving the Wiki.
