TOGAF® in the context of Emergent Enterprise Architecture

The recognition of organizations as complex adaptive systems has given rise to considerations of emergence and a newly derived definition of emergent enterprise architecture as for instance discussed at GARTNER. Such an approach recognizes organizations as non-linear and highly complex systems that require a rethinking about how they are to be represented within the context of EA.

This recognition has also become a special topic in many countries in the EU and adjacent nation allies thatconsider how prevailing system of systems thinking, using document-based approaches and UML-based methodologies to model contents as static in-coherent system-perspective views. In recent collaborations with colleagues who workwith Scandinavian defense there is increasingly a recognition that the technical architectures developed using DoDAF, MoDAF and NAF and similar approaches and methodologies while useful as specifications for integratingcurrent systems and the project portfolios, has less to offer for developing the dynamic situation awareness architectures required for instance in NATOmission analyses and planning.

This same recognition is being discussed within the US DoD. In our presentation we discuss emergent enterprise architecture and new modeling approaches such as active knowledge modeling. In our paper we consider how these new theoretical advances can be incorporated into TOGAF® approaches to establish more robust and adaptive architectures.
