A Toolkit for Enterprise Architects Bringing Enterprise Architecture to realization

'In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance … it was not uncommon for buildings to fall down soon after completion… The superstitious attributed these failures to supernatural causes, but to the more knowledgeable, the real culprits were the architects and the builders who had made fundamental (though imperfectly understood) errors in design'
Ross King from "Brunelleschi's Dome"

Today, as in medieval times, the right architectural decisions and tools are critical if we are to build long-lasting, adaptable structures or systems.

At PSEG, we view Enterprise Architecture as a framework of principles, recommended practices, guidelines, and standards which direct the design, construction, deployment, and management of IT initiatives across the enterprise. The primary objective is to guide an organization in the implementation of an enterprise-wide, IT architecture which provides the capabilities to deploy IT systems as required to meet the business strategic objectives. The ultimate goal is to provide the organization with a sustainable competitive advantage via its IT capabilities. Today's Enterprise Architects need a toolkit to turn their EA vision into reality. This session will discuss some of the tools/artifacts that have been used in practice, along with the related area which they address:

  • Tools to insure business and IT alignment:
  • Business Alignment Model, Architecture Business Domains classifications, Architectural Communities
  • Tools to guide investments for critical applications and facilitate investment planning:
  • Life Cycle Plans
  • Tools to define Enterprise Architecture
  • Target Architecture Model
  • Tools to support governance
  • Architecture Fit Assessment and Architecture Principles
  • Tools to scan new technology and relate to business needs
  • Position Papers

The Chief Technology Office at Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) has created, and begun to execute, a holistic strategy to manage the technology assets of the enterprise via the above mentioned tools.
