The Singapore Conference Server

To support the Members Conference in Singapore we will have a table-based network, with a web server holding a substantial subset of the Open Group web site, together with a limited external connection to the Internet (via a dial-up link at 56k on a good day).

In addition, there will be provision for material to be uploaded to specific areas of the local web site via an ftp server.

We regret that Open Group Systems Administration staff will not be available to help set up members' PCs. Please ensure that your PC is correctly configured before your trip.

Electrical Power

Power in the hotel is available through British-style 3-pin, 13 amp sockets with rectangular pins.  The voltage is 220-240 and the frequency 50 cps.  If you have used your laptop in the UK you need exactly the same setup.

Physical connection to network

To connect to the network, you will need an ethernet card, with either 10-base-2 (Co-ax) or 10-base-T (twisted pair). If you wish to use 10-base-T please bring a connecting wire with an RJ45 plug on the end to connect to the hub.

Software environment

We will be using TCP/IP networking.

If all you want to do is connect to the local web server the only software you will need is a web browser and a suitably-configured TCP/IP protocol implementation.

Set your TCP/IP settings as follows:

  1. IP Address: Obtain an IP address automatically
  2. Gateway: None
  3. WINS: Disable WINS resolution
  4. DNS Configuration: Enable DNS You will probably need something in the Host and Domain boxes, but the contents really don't matter much. If you don't have anything there, try putting your machine name in the Host box and opengroup.org in the Domain box.

Browser settings:

Make sure that you are not trying to use a proxy server.
The "name" of the web server is 192.168.0.1

If you are one of the people who needs to upload data to the local web, you will need an ftp client installed on your PC. You will be issued with a user name and password to allow access to your specific area of the web.

The "name" of the ftp server is also 192.168.0.1

If you want to access the Internet, our external connection will allow access to the outside world for web access, but we will be sharing a single dial-up line, so performance will not be very good if we have a large number of concurrent users.

Depending on the security mechanisms at your home site, you may also be able to use the external link to access your electronic mail.

We will not know the IP number associated with our external link in advance, and the IP number will change every time we have to reconnect. So, if your site relies on IP filters, you may not be able to get through.

If in doubt, please contact your system administrators before leaving for Singapore.
