Java
Adoption

Without question Java is a crucially important new technology and will play a pivotal role within the fulfilment of the IT DialTone vision.

There have been two interesting sessions on Java at recent conferences and this will be the third in that series. The purpose of this one is to help customers who are deciding when and how to adopt Java-based technologies and to alert them to any issues that should be considered in their planning.

In the initial sessions it became clear that there is a lot of confusion about Java caused by the type of reporting seen so far in the press. This is in part a consequence of the fact that Java is not only an important language but is also set to become a key operating environment - as important as UNIX has been todate.

It appears that the key requirements for Open Group participants are:

  • to understand what's what in the Java technology space
  • to gain an appreciation of the appropriate timing for adoption of the various elements of the Java family.

We envisage some form of educational session(s) at the January Members Conference in San Francisco. In the limited time available in this session in Singapore we will focus on getting to a roadmap for Java, the top issue identified in Miami.

For those wishing to get up to speed on Java we have provided a set of informational links on Java books, education and other resources
