Architecture Briefing

On Wednesday, October 28th, the group will host a full-day Briefing, open to non-members of The Open Group, on The Open Group Architectural Framework (TOGAF) and the IT DialTone Architecture.

These sessions will build on the successful TOGAF ADM Briefing presented at Miami, to cover: the background to TOGAF and the TOGAF Program; the core component of TOGAF, its Architecture Development Method (ADM): the other components of TOGAF (its Technical Reference Model (TRM) and Standards Information Base (SIB)); practical case studies from around the world on the use of TOGAF; and The Open Group's own IT DialTone Architecture, as a specific example of a rich and highly integrated systems architecture providing a core set of building blocks for the construction of enterprise architectures.

Lunch
14:00-15:30 TOGAF Case Studies

This session will cover three different Case Studies of customer organizations using TOGAF to develop enterprise architectures.

Case Study #1: Use of TOGAF by The Diary Farm Group, Hong Kong

Presenter: Geoff McClelland, Director, Centre For Open Systems P/L, Australia

The Open Group's Architectural Framework (TOGAF) was used as the underpinning methodology in the creation of The Dairy Farm Group (DFG) Technical Architecture. DFG is the largest retailer in Asia and is undertaking a group-wide supply chain re-engineering effort in conjunction with their major IT suppliers (IBM, HP, Microsoft and Oracle). The Open Group has supplied some of the key resources to assist DFG in developing, promulgating, and enforcing the TA - a corner-stone of the re-engineering strategy.

Geoff McClelland will outline the “why” of the decision to use TOGAF, the benefits and pitfalls of the approach, and what was learned along the way.

Case Study #2: Using TOGAF as a Procurement Tool

Presenter: David Blair, ITSA, Department of Social Security, UK

David will share the experiences of the UK DSS in using TOGAF to focus on architectural and engineering principles as a means of differentiating between Service Providers, and to in building concensus for its Technical Architecture.

Case Study #3: Use of TOGAF Within Litton PRC

Presenter: Hal Wilson, Vice President and General Manager, 'Net Solutions, Litton PRC

Hal will provide an overview of Litton / PRC's experience with TOGAF and the use of architectural frameworks in Litton / PRC's business operations.

Break
16:00-17:30 The IT DialTone Architecture

Presenter: Mike Lambert, Chief Technical Officer, The Open Group

In the IT DialTone Architecture, The Open Group has used the methods described in TOGAF to define an architecture for an infrastructure based on the Internet and related technologies, capable of supporting the deployment of interoperable IT environments and mission-critical business applications.

Mike will provide an introduction to the IT DialTone infrastructure and the IT DialTone Architecture, explaining the relationship with TOGAF.
