Management Briefing
Following the success of our System Management Briefings San Diego, we offer two ninety minute tutorials on "The State of Distributed Management" and "Applications Management".

Our Objective: To provide a business-oriented briefing for our general membership and to raise awareness of key system management issues and topics.

Audience: These tutorials give a basic understanding of the subject and the issues and are best suited to attendees who are either new to the subject or wish to view the subject from a business rather than a purely technical viewpoint. These briefings could be considered as a primer for those considering active participation in the System Management Program Group.

Format: A half-day session consisting of a brief introduction to The Open Group System Management Program plus two ninety minute sessions with opportunities for audience questions and answers.

11.00 a.m. - Session 2:"Applications Management"
by John Sweitzer, Tivoli Systems

Managing applications in a distributed environment is a challenge because the environment itself is complex and it requires integrating the staffs responsible for the various points in the application life cycle. This session will summarize why application management is important and discuss some of the ways the industry is actually addressing the challenges. One of the industry efforts, Desktop Management Task Force Common Information Model initiative, will be covered in detail to illustrate how the challenges are being addressed. In particular, Version 2 of Application Model provides a robust structure that combines the proven approaches of other industry efforts. This session will review the key classes and associations in the application management model using a realistic example. The discussion will also illustrate how the model can be used by a variety of management tools.

John W. Sweitzer is a Consulting Engineer for Tivoli Systems. John's career has involved a variety of technical and management positions associated with systems management ranging back to 1981. Currently, John's is focusing on managing applications in distributed environments. This includes chairing the Application Management Working Group of the Desktop Management Task Force.

Mr. Sweitzer is interested in developing technologies which will facilitate the integration of software systems using techniques pioneered in the database and the artificial intelligence disciplines. He has a B.S. in Computer Science from Penn State University and a M.S. in Computer Science from North Carolina State University.
