Working together for Enterprise Integration
Allen Brown will discuss the objectives of the whole Conference and highlight the benefits from vendors and customers working together to identify and resolve the issues that relate to Mobile Network Computing.  He will focus specifically on the need for open standards integration to reduce fragmentation and aid growth of Wireless and Mobile Network Computing.

0930 The Global Galactic Collision of Standards
The accelerating convergence between the Information Technology, Telecommunications and Wireless industries brings with it a collision of standards activities on a scale never before envisioned. For mobile computing, the Internet standards are being used as the basis of standards activities everywhere but they are being adapted to the needs of the wireless world and adapted differently in each of the major economic regions, giving rise to major concerns for fragmentation. Issues of security, quality of service, privacy, and directory management are some of the issues that will be addressed as attendees learn of the challenges of being part of an enterprise IS environment when outside the corporate firewall and of some of the approaches being used.

Market and Standards Trends in Wireless Computing
Martin Garner is well placed to look at the much heralded mass market for mobile data, the chance to bring wireless connectivity to a large population.  It also enables future visions, called by some the "information superskyway" to be pursued by suppliers, with many suppliers and operators basing their positioning on the Internet.

Martin will look at the market for cellular data and how it will develop as the main market focus shifts towards consumer and multi-media applications.  Amongst other things, he will look at the impact of the shift to IP networks on the growth of the industry.

1120 Pervasive Computing
With practical computing capability appearing in an increasingly wide range of devices from phones to mobile devices to TVs to automobiles to white goods, we are beginning to live the vision of pervasive computing. David McKenzie, Director of Pervasive Computing, IBM Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA) will talk about the business drivers for this revolution and explain why it's happening so fast. He will outline IBM's strategy for supporting their customers in this endeavor and talk about the importance of their partnerships with   network operators, device manufacturers, and enterprise customers. Illustrating current experience with customer case studies, David will also cover some of the issues and challenges that are currently being addressed, including the need for greater standardization to support enterprise integration.

Wireless Computing and the Work of the WAP Forum
Unwired Planet co-founded the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Forum in 1997, with Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia.  The WAP Forum is the industry association that has developed the de facto world standard for wireless information and telephony services on digital mobile phones and other wireless terminals.  Handset manufacturers representing over 75% of the world market across all technologies have committed to shipping WAP-enabled devices.  Carriers representing nearly 100 million subscribers worldwide have joined WAP.  WAP allows carriers to strengthen their service offerings by providing subscribers with the information they want and need while on the go.  The WAP Forum has published a global wireless protocol specification based on existing Internet standards such as XML and IP for all wireless networks.

Chuck Parrish will provide an overview of developments in Wireless Computing and provide an update on recent developments including the work of the WAP Forum.

Evangelizing standards - why innovative technologies need collaboration from Day 1
Symbian is a joint-venture between Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola, and Psion formed to create the market for a new class of device bringing together the worlds of mobile computing and wireless communications.  Symbian calls this new paradigm the Wireless Information Device (WID) and EPOC, Symbian's operating system platform, is set to become the de facto standard to power them.

Jeremy Burton, Technology Manager at Symbian, explains this new market and introduces the Wireless Value Chain.  Through reference to real world problems, user scenarios, and the evolution of key technologies, he will demonstrate both the opportunities and the challenges that this new market presents.

1550 The Path towards UMTS Technologies for the Information Society
As the Information Society moves into the next millenium, users of data and multimedia telecommunications services will expect and demand that these same services will continue to be available to them when they are on the move. Multimedia services allow the delivery of a rich variety of audio, video, and text-based information in addition to basic voice. New enabling technologies such as GPRS and UMTS will pave the way for new services, applications, and new business opportunities.
