Mr. Kirwin researches all aspects of management issues related to distributed computing. He created and maintains the industry standard Total Cost of Ownership Model, a research tool that has influenced both vendors and consumers of information technology.

Prior to joining Gartner Group in 1986, Mr. Kirwin worked for more than 15 years in end-user computing, covering all platforms, from mainframes to PCs. He has designed and managed information systems for government and commercial use, including large-scale text management, decision support, graphics, electronic mail and disrobuted financial reporting. His practise skills include systems analysis and design, training, strategic planning, and information resource and technology management.

On the vendor side, he has experience in sales management, product development and product marketing. Bachelor's degree from Southern Connecticut State Univeristy.
