Dear Colleague,

This is your invitation to attend a one-day conference that will update you on the current "state of the technology" in the field of Real-time & Embedded Systems.   This presents an ideal opportunity for interested customers and vendors to hear from world-class experts and debate with them the challenges and solutions.

The topics for this meeting of the forum include Real-time Java, Real-time and Embedded Linux and safety critical software. Among the speakers, Manfred Hollstein of Red Hat will present on today's embedded Linux, Bernhardt Kuhn on Real-time Linux, Wolfgang Hartmann of Siemens AG will present on the J Consortium's Specification "Real-Time Data Access". and Marcelo Masera of the Joint Research Centre is to present on Critical Infrastructure and Embedded Systems. A member of the expert group will present on the Distributed Real-time Specification for Java.
Further information is on the full agenda.

Following the one day conference the Forum meets in closed session on Thursday 26 April and will have a joint meeting with The Open Group's newest forum, the Quality of Service Task Force, discussing the overlapping issues of the two areas. The agenda for the members only session is here.

Background

Today's marketplace for Real-time and Embedded Systems is growing at an exponential rate. Implementers of this technology face the same challenges: the need for fast, predictable and bounded response to events such as interrupts and messages plus the ability to manage system resources to meet processing deadlines.  However, few standards exist to address this market place and those that do fall short.  The Open Group's Real-time and Embedded Systems Forum intends to plug the gap, to bring together system developers and users, to build upon existing standards where they exist, working with existing groups within the industry, evolve product standards that address market requirements, and develop tests and certification programs that deliver products meeting these requirements.  Ultimately, the vision of the Forum is to grow the marketplace through the development of standardized systems based on real product solutions.

Industry sectors that will benefit from the Forum include aerospace, defense, telecommunications, manufacturing, automotive, medical and scientific research.

This is a great opportunity to learn how the technologies currently available in the market are addressing your requirements, and compare your challenges with those of your peers.

Future dates for the rest of the year are:
Week commencing July 16 Austin, Texas, Forum Meeting
Week commencing October 22 Amsterdam, Holland, Forum Meeting

Yours truly,

Andrew Josey
