Wireless Networking at the Conference
Access to the Internet during
The Open Group Conference April 23/27
at the Maritim
proArte Hotel, Berlin, Germany
PLEASE ACT NOW - YOU WILL NEED TO ACQUIRE YOUR OWN WIRELESS LAN CARD
The wireless
local area networking since San Diego in January, 2000 have been extremely
successful. .
In future, we will endeavor to provide
(1) A high speed link to the Internet
(2) Normal wired Ethernet access at a central point
(3) Wireless local area network coverage of as much of the meeting area as we
can practically achieve
We are now able to confirm availability of these facilities for at least the
next few meetings: Apr 2001 - Berlin,
and Jul 2001 - Austin
Please Note that we will NOT have PC cards for loan.
If you wish to access the wired network, you will need to bring with
you a suitable interface card for your PC and an RJ45 (10-BASE-T) connecting
cord.
If you wish to access the wireless network, you will need to bring an
interface card supporting the IEEE 802.11b standard. These cards are compatible
with wireless internet services being implemented in hotels and airports by
companies like Wayport and MobileStar. Compatible devices are Wi-Fi, branded
by WECA and are now broadly available at reasonable prices. A list of compatible
devices is maintained by WECA on their Web site at http://www.wi-fi.org/certified_products.asp
Whichever connection you use, you will need to configure your TCP/IP protocol
for dhcp.
We will use NAT (Network Address Translation); the dhcp server will define the
DNS address and gateway.
If you wish to access systems behind your companies firewall, such as you in-house
mail system, you will need to talk to your in-house systems administrators to
make suitable arrangements. We will endeavor to make necessary information available
in advance of each meeting.
