The Open Group Members Conference
Building a Global IT Infrastructure
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
26-30 January 1998

The theme of this conference is "Building a Global IT Infrastructure".

Featured in the plenary session are:

  • two customer case studies (from the Telco sector),
  • IDC research on the value of investing in a standard infrastructure,
  • vertical industry work undertaken to capture customers' business and infrastructure requirements - including recent work on business requirements with the Association for Retail Technology Standards (ARTS).

The Open Group's VP and chief technical officer, Mike Lambert, will provide a review of the progress made on turning the IT DialTone concept into reality. There will also be high-level updates and briefings on specific and relevant projects (such as the Common Data Security Architecture and the Network Computer Profile) that are contributing to the implementation of the IT DialTone.

In a concept new to our member conferences, we have added a special introductory session on the "Applications and Data Services" Program, plus detailed briefings on Security Management and Single Sign-On. This latter session is intended for people who have not been involved in the Open Group Security program and would like an overview of the issues and current activities in these areas.

Program Group sessions in DCE, Desktop, Management(DSM), Security, Transaction Processing and TOGAF (Architecture Framework) will continue their work.

Highlights include:

  • The next steps on DCE, including the results of the recent requirements gathering activity in the Securities community (as a direct result of decisions taken at the Boston conference)
  • Current trends, issues and updated requirements in the Desktop arena
  • Management aspects of the IT DialTone and LDAP-based management
  • The latest on CDSA, PKI Architecture and Single Sign-On plus the new Security Education program
  • TP usage scenarios; towards a TP architecture for IT DialTone
  • TOGAF's 1998 work program

With each conference we strive to provide you with plenary sessions that address relevent and current IT issues. The format of this conference represents a further refinement of the formula we have used recently. Each future conference will be a work in progress based on your invaluable feedback and participation.

One major value of The Open Group membership is the opportunity to meet and network with your peers. To better facilitate this, it has been suggested that we provide (only to members) information about each member participant. We have added three questions to the conference registration form to capture this information. The questions are brief and voluntary. Once a critical mass of information is accumulated we will publish a "yearbook" accessible only to members. Please do not delay your registration in order to provide this information - you can always add it later.

As before, registration is simplified if you use your Open Group username and password but this is not mandatory. Should you have any problem using the on-line form and need assistance please contact the people named on the form.

We look forward to seeing you in Amsterdam.
