Desktop Program Group

Further information on the program group

Agenda

Chair - Julie Surer, MITRE Corp.
Vice Chair - Garry Paxinos, Metro Link Inc.
The Open Group Representative - Dave Knorr

Purpose: The primary objective for the Desktop Group, as requested by the members, is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, learn new emerging technologies in the desktop area, be updated on The Open Group activities as a leader in the Desktop environment, debate various desktop alternative approaches to learn their advantages, and to see demos of new desktop technologies being introduced.

Many of the Group’s representatives see the "desktop as the integration point of user to application". The desktop area is also viewed as being such a "broad area" and evolving very rapidly. The group has voiced preference to remain as a forum of common interests, with information exchange and presentations providing "real value" to their business decisions in the Desktop area.

Amsterdam Meeting: With the advent of the networked computing, the landscape of how people use their desktop systems and connect them to the world is rapidly changing. Advances in Java, NCs, NetPCs,

Network User Interfaces, and browsers make tracking the future nearly impossible.

Presentations in these Desktop areas will be given, along with technology updates from The Open Group Desktop technology organization; the IT DialTone Architecture Board progress by the representative from the Desktop PG - Julie Surer; and a report on the X Project Team activities and the next releases of the X Window System. An update and separate session on the NCRP will also be held. (Results from the IT DialTone Architecture Board will help determine future activities and focus areas for the Desktop PG.)

A Desktop Requirements gathering session is also planned for the Amsterdam meeting, depending on the attending audience and Julie’s progress report from the Architecture Board.

Key Desktop companies considering presenting at the Amsterdam meeting: Netscape; SCO; Caldera; EurOpen User Group; other Desktop related individuals and companies.

Agenda Presentations: Agenda presentations can be arranged for the Amsterdam meeting, if you are interested in presenting. For additional information, please contact:
