SOA and Cloud Computing Work Group

Objective of Meeting

The aim of these meetings was to progress the work of the SOA and Cloud Computing Work Groups.

Summary

The Cloud Work Group meeting agenda that was posted in advance of the conference covered both the SOA and the Cloud Work Group meeting. This agenda was, however, modified during the meeting. The first session (09:00-10:30) and the second session (11:00-12:30) discussed Security (jointly between the SOA Work Group, the Cloud Work Group, and the Security Forum) and Architecture for Cloud and SOA (jointly between the SOA and Cloud Work Groups), as advertised. The discussions in the two afternoon sessions focused on the production of The Open Group book on Cloud Computing, rather than on the work of the Cloud Business Artifacts and Cloud Business Use-Cases projects. (The book is in fact heavily dependent on the work of these projects, so that the discussion was very relevant to them.)

The first session progressed the work of the project on Security for the Cloud and SOA. This is a joint project of the Cloud Computing Work Group with the SOA Work Group and the Security Forum. The session discussed the underlying issues, under the leadership of Stuart Boardman of Getronics, and made good progress. Further details may be found in the report of the Security Forum meeting.

The second session was chaired jointly by SOA Work Group co-chair Heather Kreger of IBM and Cloud Computing Work Group co-chair TJ Virdi of the Boeing Company. It discussed the development of a Reference Architecture for Cloud Computing, and the relation to that architecture of the Reference Architecture for SOA. It also considered the need for work on Governance for Cloud Computing. These discussions impacted on the work of the SOA Reference Architecture project of the SOA Work Group, and the Cloud Computing Reference Architecture project of the Cloud Computing Work Group. They resulted in actions to develop an overview Cloud Reference Architecture diagram, and for the Cloud Work Group Steering Committee to consider setting up a formal project to address Cloud Computing Governance.

The two afternoon sessions were chaired by TJ Virdi, and discussed the development of the book on Cloud Computing that is being produced by The Open Group. This book is based on the work of the Cloud Computing Explained, Cloud Business Artifacts, and Cloud Business Use-Cases projects of the Cloud Computing Work Group. It is aimed at a business or business/technical audience, and focuses on the business considerations affecting the decision to use Cloud Computing, the assessment and management of risk and return on investment, and the impact on the user enterprise. An initial draft had been developed prior to the meeting. The meeting agreed on a timeline for completion of the book, and assigned actions and responsibilities for the work.

Outputs

The meeting did not produce outputs of itself, but raised actions for materials to be developed, as described above.

Next Steps

Work will continue on the Security for the Cloud and SOA project, on the SOA and Cloud Computing Reference Architecture projects, and on The Open Group book on Cloud Computing. In particular, the meeting contributed significantly to the development of the book by agreeing on a timeline and actions.
