SOA Services and Semantics

Objective of Meeting

This was a joint meeting of the SOA Working Group and the Semantic Interoperability Working Group.

Its purpose was to explore the role of semantics in identification of and communication between services in a service-oriented architecture.

Summary

Chris Harding, The Open Group Forum Director for SOA and Semantic Interoperability, presented a review of conclusions from the Glasgow workshop on Information Architecture for SOA.

Daniel Serain of Oracle then gave a presentation on the use of semantics in SOA services, and led a discussion on an approach based on UDEF and OWL to facilitate service interoperability and re-use in a generic SOA architecture.

Arnold Van Overeem of Capgemini then gave a presentation introducing the concept of UDEF Registry Switching. He proposed this as a mechanism to address a key part of the problem of semantic interoperability in a distributed environment.

Outputs

The discussions of the meeting are captured in the minutes that are available to Open Group members.

Next Steps

The topics of this meeting were discussed further in the Semantic Interoperability Working Group Meeting.
