SOA/TOGAF Workshop
Objective of Meeting
The aim of the workshop was to explore the development and
deployment of enterprise service-oriented architectures,
based on ideas developed by the SOA Working Group,
and building on the results of similar workshops at previous conferences.
Summary
Chris Harding, The Open Group Forum Director for SOA, presented an example
of the use of TOGAF to develop a service-oriented architecture.
The example had been used at the Glasgow and Chicago conferences
(April and July 2008) to explore what happens in the Preliminary Phase
and Phases A and B when TOGAF is used for SOA. The Munich workshop
summarized the results of these previous workshops, and took the example
through the remaining phases of TOGAF, focusing on Phases C and D.
This led to some interesting discussions on:
- The granularity of service identification and definition work
- The difference between
enterprise architecture and solution architecture
- Identifying services in relation to existing applications
- The need to gain experience through pilot projects
- The need for iteration between phases
Outputs
The conclusions of the workshop are captured in the minutes that are available to
Open Group members.
Next Steps
The example should be developed further, as part of the SOA/TOGAF
Practical Guide project of the SOA
Working Group. Once complete, it
should be published.
