This tutorial, which was open to all participants at the Enterprise
Architecture Practitioners Conference at Toronto, was given by Vish
Viswanathan, Managing Principal, CC and C Solutions, Australia.
Following the North American and European launches of TOGAF 9, the new edition of
TOGAF, earlier in the year, this tutorial gave a general introduction to The
Open Group, and described what the Architecture Forum has achieved to
date with the development of TOGAF up to and including TOGAF 9 "Enterprise
Edition". It focused specifically on the key elements that are new in
TOGAF Version 9, and gave an overview of the TOGAF 9 Certification
program.
The Open Group has been active within the architecture domain for the
last 15 years, developing and making freely available The Open Group Architecture Framework
– TOGAF. TOGAF is a comprehensive,
industry standard framework and methodology for the design, evaluation,
and implementation of enterprise architectures.
With the increasing realization within
the industry of the importance of Enterprise Architecture in the
development of information systems, TOGAF today is accepted and used around the world
as the industry standard framework and method for enterprise architecture.
TOGAF has been and continues to be evolved within The Open Group
Architecture Forum. Its development has been guided by and based on the
knowledge and experience of Open Group members who are practicing
Architects working for a wide range of enterprises throughout the world.
This special pre-conference tutorial described the background to the
evolution of TOGAF, and its progression up to and
including the latest version, TOGAF Version 9.
Developed, reviewed, and approved by a collaborative of 300 members
from some of the world’s leading IT customers and vendors, TOGAF 9 is
an evolution of TOGAF 8.1.1 that preserves the core TOGAF Architecture
Development Method (ADM), and thereby preserves existing investments in TOGAF
– investments in the knowledge and skills of people, and in tools.
Key additions in TOGAF Version 9 are:
- A new modular structure, which supports greater usability,
allows incremental adoption, and supports evolutionary release
management for TOGAF.
- The TOGAF 9 Architecture Content Framework, which provides a
structured metamodel for architectural artifacts that allows the
major work products that an architect creates to be consistently
defined, structured, and presented.
- Extended guidance on using TOGAF – a set of concepts
introduced to support an integrated hierarchy of architectures being
developed.
- Explicit consideration of architectural styles; for
example:
- Applying iteration to the ADM
- Applying the ADM at different enterprise levels
- Security architecture and the ADM
- Using TOGAF to define and govern SOA
- Additional ADM detail
The tutorial was very well received, and will be repeated at future
Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conferences. Additional tutorials, focusing on
specific aspects of TOGAF 9, will also be included at future conferences.
