Grid Enterprise Services:
Review of Proposed IPv6 Product Standard

Objective of Meeting

This session had two objectives. The Open Group has been interacting with the DISA IPv6 Standards Work Group on the subject of a proposed IPv6 Product Standard. The DISA IPv6 Standards work group proposed to submit to the GridES Forum an unofficial draft IPv6 product standard for review. This product standard was based on a requirements document from the DISA IPv6 Transition Office. The importance of this work is that it will provide a basis for an initial industry-based IPv6 product standard. The IPv6 Business Scenario session, held the previous day, helped to define a suitable "scope and bounds" for an initial product standard and certification program. Our current intended goal is to have a certification program online first quarter of 2006. This session was the first joint meeting between The Open Group and the IPv6 Forum/NAv6TF to discuss priorities and direction since the two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop an industry-based IPv6 product standard and certification program.

Summary

An overview was conducted by The Open Group on best practices in developing a industry-based product standard and certification program. This included the subject of "branding" as well as policy and processes. The goal of a certification program is to provide fairness, auditability, and repeatability at the necessary level of assurance while striking the appropriate balance between risk and benefit. The UNIX03 certification was used as a reference program. The unofficial proposed draft IPv6 product standard submitted by the DISA Standards work group was reviewed. This will be made available for public review after allowing a further internal review by the participants. The original requirements document from the DISA IPv6 Transition Office will also be made available for public review. The participants in this session also discussed with The Open Group and the IPv6 Forum next steps in developing a certification/branding program and product standard. Note that the participants of this session elected to extend the Thursday session to include the items scheduled for the Friday session as well as reviewing the results of the Business Scenario by email.

Outputs

Both the unofficial proposed draft IPv6 product standard submitted by the DISA Standards work group and the original requirements document from the DISA IPv6 Transition Office will be made available for public review and comment. A web site is being set up specifically for a public review and comment of these documents. If you would like to be notified when it becomes available, please send a request to j.spaulding@opengroup.org. The results of the Business Scenario session will be made publicly available after internal review by the participants.

Next Steps

Two workgroups were formed:

  1. The first will investigate the current Logo2 program and determine what a product standard and its indicator of conformance would have looked like had the program been developed based on one. This will enable us to do a gap analysis between the current program and the proposed product standard.
  2. The second will develop an extensible set of  hierarchical documents  that outlines the structure of a product standard.

The following additional areas were identified as needing to be addressed:

  1. Trademark issues
  2. Broader industry participation is needed to make this effort a truly global industry-based product standard. Additional participants were identified and their explicit participation will be elicited. For further information, please contact j.spaulding@opengroup.org
  3. Establish a cyber workspace for future collaborative activities.
  4. Continue the Business Scenario Workshop with new participants.
