Common Core Identifiers
Objective of Meeting
The Common Core Identifiers Work Group is a joint initiative
of The Open Group's Identity Management
Work Area with the Distributed Management Task Force and the Network Applications Consortium.
Its mission is to set the stage for widespread usage of a common,
standard way of representing identities of people and things.
The Work Group was started at the Common Core Identity Representations
Summit at The Open Group
San Francisco conference in January 2005. Prior to the New York
meeting, it had developed an incomplete draft Business Scenario,
and started work on a framework for common core identifiers.
The aims of the New York meeting were to:
- Review the statement of objectives and requirements,
and determine what further requirements work was needed
- Progress work on the framework
- Review progress against the agreed work plan,
and decide on the next steps to be taken
Summary
The statements of objectives and requirements from the draft Business Scenario
that had been produced by the group were reviewed.
The meeting agreed that they could be stated as they stood
as group outputs, although the Scenario is not yet complete.
The Scenario should be completed so that there will be rationale
to back up its conclusions.
The group worked on its definition of a Framework for
core identifiers. It developed and improved the draft material
that was input to the meeting.
A representative of the eXtensible Resource Identifiers (XRI)
community described the XRI concept. There was considerable
discussion on whether and how it might meet the requirements
for a core identifiers framework,
and of what modifications might be required to XRI.
While not definitely concluding that XRI
should be the core identifiers framework,
the meeting agreed to assume XRI
as the context for the core identifiers work.
Outputs
The minutes of the meeting will be posted to the Core
Identifier Work Group Members' web page.
Next Steps
The Business Scenario will be completed,
and a summary statement of requirements will be produced.
Work will continue to complete the Framework document.
Investigations will proceed on
how to encode specific kinds of identifier in XRI,
and on how to store XRI identifiers in directories.
