Architecture Forum

Objective of Meeting

The objectives of the meeting were:

  • To receive updates on a number of ongoing projects
  • To discuss future liaisons with key partners for TOGAF9, in particular NASCIO and itSMF (who manage the evolution of ITIL)
  • To progress the evolution of TOGAF towards Version 9.

The revised meeting agenda is here.

Summary

In this workshop the members of the Architecture Forum progressed work on TOGAF Version 9, and in addition they received reports on a number of important ongoing projects and liaisons.

The presentations and detailed minutes of these proceedings are available from the Architecture Forum members' web site.

Topics covered:

Architecture Terminology BoF

The published agenda was extended by the addition of sessions in the morning and evening of Thursday 21st July, to enable an informal Birds-of-a Feather (BoF) session to take place to discuss architecture terminology.

Bill Estrem, Chair of the Architecture Forum, facilitated this session, which produced an excellent discussion, and included a presentation by Stan Locke of Zachman Framework Associates on recent work by ZFA in collaboration with a world-leading linguistics institute on further refining the Zachman Framework, and the implications for architecture terminology.

This work will be progressed in future meetings.

TOGAF Version 9 Workshop

This part of the workshop was structured around the themes identified for TOGAF Version 9:

  • Architecture Development
  • Architecture-based Business Transformation
  • Architecture Deployment
  • Architecture Value Realization
  • Architecture Management

The workshop gave a holistic view of the current status of TOGAF Version 9, and focused on presenting, gaining endorsement for, and further progressing the work on TOGAF9.

The workshop opened with a detailed review of strategy, work to date, and transition plans for TOGAF9, by Judith Jones of Architecting-The-Enterprise Limited, leader of the overall TOGAF9 development program.

Interim workshops had been held prior to this New York Conference, and the various project leaders had agreed to standardize on the use of a mind-mapping tool with HTML generation capability as a way of articulating and integrating the detailed structures developed to date.

John Spencer, Forum Director, presented a snapshot of the look-and-feel of the eventual TOGAF Version 9 documentation suite. Although mind-mapping tools are being used to develop and integrate the various major domains of TOGAF9, the final publication is still targeted to be a set of interlinked HTML pages, as previously.

Ed Roberts, Tom Haley, Naval Underwater Warfare Center, then gave an update on the TEAMS project, which is being implemented using TOGAF, and is planned to provide a case study for the use of TOGAF in conjunction with MDA modeling standards.

The leaders of the various subprojects in TOGAF9:

Judith Jones, Architecting-The-Enterprise
Simon Dalziel, Architecting-The-Enterprise
Bob Weisman, CGI
Dave Harrison, Architecting-The-Enterprise
Stuart Macgregor, Real IRM

presented a high-level review of the work-in-progress in their respective areas. The meeting participants subsequently broke out into subgroups to look in detail at each area, and the TOGAF9 project work leaders reported back in plenary with the suggestions and improvement points identified.

Plans for further development of TOGAF 9 were agreed, with a view to having drafts and further development proposals available for review at the next meeting in Houston.

TOGAF Product Marketing

Graham Bird, The Open Group VP Marketing, gave an update on the marketing of TOGAF8 and on plans for the effective product marketing of TOGAF9.

The Open Group's key market messages are now: Architecture, Boundarylessness, and Certification - ABC.

The Open Group Marketing Department is progressing work on the development of training materials for TOGAF8, and on a professionally typeset and published book of the TOGAF8 documentation. These materials are expected to be available for sanity review by the Architecture Forum shortly.

TOGAF and the IT Architect Certification program have received significant press coverage in the last quarter. Many organizations around the world are using TOGAF8, but it is essential to collate effective case studies of TOGAF8. Architecture Forum members can help by representing their organizations at other conferences and featuring The Open Group and TOGAF.

More volunteers are invited for the marketing working group that has been set up to help in the marketing of TOGAF9.

TOGAF and NASCIO

Bob Weisman of CGI and Eric Sweden of NASCIO led a discussion on the plans to leverage the work of the North American States CIO organization in TOGAF Version 9, and strategies for ongoing communication and collaboration between NASCIO and The Open Group Architecture Forum.

NASCIO has done significant work in several areas relevant to TOGAF9, and several of the TOGAF9 project leaders are interested in leveraging that work.

Eric Sweden had previously presented a key part of NASCIO's work, the EA Value Chain, during the Architecture Practitioners Conference, and had presented the backgorund to NASCIO's work generally in his closing plenary on Wednesday.

There was general agreement on both sides that there was significant potential for synergy between the two organizations, which both sides will seek to realize in the weeks and months to come.

TOGAF and ITIL

Following the NASCIO discussion, Judith Jones of Architecting-The-Enterprise and Aidan Lawes, CEO of itSMF UK & itSMF International led an analogous discussion on synergies between TOGAF9 and ITIL, and strategies for ongoing communication and collaboration between the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) and The Open Group Architecture Forum.

The direct leveraging of material from ITIL is more problematic than is the case with NASCIO, since ITIL is UK Crown copyright, and there are currently stringent terms and conditions associated with re-use of material in any kind of commercial product. (TOGAF has its own commercial license for commercial use.)

ITIL is about to undergo a significant refresh, and there are opportunities for synergy between the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) and The Open Group overall - not only the Architecture Forum, but other Forums such as Enterprise Management.

There had already been preliminary discussions between Judith Jones as TOGAF9 program manager, John Spencer, Director of The Open Group Architecture Forum, and Aidan Lawes. The discussion at New York built on that earlier meeting, exploring synergies between TOGAF9 and ITIL, and strategies for ongoing communication and collaboration between the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) and The Open Group Architecture Forum.

Security ADM Update

David Jackson of IBM and Michael Barrett of Johnson & Johnson are co- leaders of this project, which seeks to identify and document guidance for the Security Architect in carrying out the TOGAF ADM.

The TOGAF ADM currently lacks any security-specific guidance and information about security. Most of the TOGAF ADM (indeed any architecture method) is about the normative flow - what the architect wants the eventual information system to do when implemented. However, security is about the things that should not happen, but could. When a Security Architect engages, s/he seeks to answer the question: What do you NOT want this system to do?

David and Michael have been working with The Open Group Security Forum to look at all the phases and steps of the ADM, and with the help of the Security Forum to develop a White Paper providing all the guidance on information that needs to be collected in order to create the Security View of the architecture.

In due course this White Paper can be incorporated into TOGAF, if deemed appropriate.

It may also be possible to generalize the approach, to illustrate how to extend the ADM for any other quality-specific domain such as manageability.

The presentation at New York gave an update on work to date and plans for finalization of the White Paper later this year.

MDA/TOGAF Synergy

This work involves collaboration between three separate consortia - The Open Group, OMG, and the Integration Consortium. David Jackson of IBM is leading the Architecture Forum's involvement in this work, with Ed Harrison of Data Access Technologies (a member of both The Open Group Architecture Forum and OMG) acting as the chair of the joint group.

On Wednesday 20th July, following the public presentations in the APC, the group split into separate working subgroups to progress work on proof-of-concept and modeling the TOGAF ADM using the MDA standard SPEM metamodel.

This work will be progressed in future meetings of the joint group.

DODAF/TOGAF Harmonization Update

The DODAF/TOGAF Synergy project team, under the leadership of Rolf Siegers of Raytheon, has been working to align the TOGAF Architecture Development Method with the products of the DODAF framework, with leading experts from both fields seeking to establish synergy between the two frameworks.

The TOGAF/DODAF update was presented by Rolf Siegers. Rolf gave an update on the work of this project team, including plans to develop a detailed mapping between the two frameworks as a White Paper later this year.

TOGAF9 Reference Models

Rolf Siegers, Raytheon and Fatma Dandashi, MITRE Corporation, who are working on the DODAF/TOGAF Harmonization project, presented an update on the work within the DODAF community to extend the work of the US federal government on architecture reference models, and proposals for potentially leveraging that work within TOGAF9.

These proposals were discussed and will be carried forward in the ongoing work on TOGAF9.

Architecture Information Base

This session was led by Bill Estrem, Metaplexity Associates and Chris Harding of The Open Group.

Chris Harding is The Open Group Forum Director responsible for Identity Management and Directory Interoperability. In his presentation, Chris presented proposals arising from the work of the Identity Management initiative within The Open Group, for a federated database of standards spanning a number of relevant de jure standards bodies and industry standards consortia.

Bill Estrem of Metaplexity Associates presented the work that he and Ian McCall of IBM are jointly leading on extending the Standards Information Base to a Building Blocks Information Base, as a repository of information on architecture building blocks, reference models, and architecture patterns - now termed an Architecture Information Base.

There was general agreement that both sets of proposals have obvious synergy, and need to be explored further.

Identity Management Architecture Guide

Ron Williams of IBM is leading this project, which is part of the work of the Identity Management initiative within The Open Group.

Ron gave an overview of the scope, purpose, and planned content of the guide, and the planned review and publication schedule.

Members of the Architecture Forum are invited to participate in the review planned for September 2005.

TOGAF9 Planning

Judith Jones, Architecting-The-Enterprise, led a session on planning for further work on TOGAF9.

The work to date has produced a great deal of value-add to the existing TOGAF8, and it is important that the introduction of the new material in TOGAF9 be properly integrated with TOGAF8.

It was agreed that the leaders of the various TOGAF9 projects will work on the feedback received at New York, and come to the Houston meeting in October with updated drafts and firm proposals for the further development and integration of their respective domains.

TOGAF Certification

James de Raeve, The Open Group VP of Certification, gave an update on plans for the extension of the TOGAF8 certification program to include a web-based examination as an indicator of compliance. James then went on to lead a workshop on scope and shape of the certification program for TOGAF9.

A number of proposals and ideas were put forward, which will be taken into account in the formulation of concrete proposals for the TOGAF9 certification program.

Outputs

Overall, this was a highly successful and productive week. The objectives of the meeting were fulfilled:

  • Members received updates on a number of important ongoing projects within the Architecture Forum.
  • The Architecture Forum's work to date on development of TOGAF Version 9 was reviewed and endorsed, and plans for further work agreed.

Next Steps

Progress the projects and liaisons within the Architecture Forum's current work plan, in particular the development of TOGAF Version 9.
