The meeting on Wednesday July 21st opened with Mike Lambert, Director of the Messaging Forum, giving a brief Introduction to the S/MIME Gateway Certification program, focusing on the value of the program to customers.

Ken Beer from Tumbleweed Communications and Luke Lucas from BT Syntegra explained how their products implement the S/MIME Gateway profile and how they are deployed.

Ken Beer in Implementing the S/MIME Gateway Specification addressed the reason why gateway encryption products are needed, how they work, and defined a set of "Implementation Best Practices". In explaining the testing that was needed to achieve certification, he indicated that the testing was repeatable by customers during deployment.

Luke Lucas in SMG Implementation presented a case study of deployment of an SMG for a very large US manufacturer, and also presented a set of Best Practices.

Building on these presentations, Ben Littauer led a discussion to initiate work on the next version of the S/MIME Gateway specification.

Five work items were identified which need to be addressed in Version 2 of the program:

  1. Automated Key exchange
  2. Signatures
  3. SMG to Desktop
  4. SMG capabilities protocol
  5. Testing service
