Chris Harding gave a presentation Dynamic Provisioning for
Mobility: Mobile and Directory (MaD) Challenge. This presentation had been given on
July 9 at the Burton Group Catalyst conference by Andrea Westerinen and Chris Apple, on
behalf of the Challenge team. It described the achievements and current status of the
Challenge, specifically covering:
- The MaD Challenge Effort
- Dynamic Provisioning Scenarios
- Challenge Scenario: Airport/Airplane
- Project Status
- MaD Information Model (InfoMod)
- MaD InfoMod Validation
- Call for Participation.
Ed Harrington then gave a presentation on Possible
Challenge Directions, covering:
- The Story So Far
- Where We Are Now
- Who is the Audience?
- Possible Phases
- What Happens Next?
There was then a discussion during which the following points were made:
- Participation of VPN client service software providers should be encouraged.
- Many organizations will not go fully wireless.
- Most people today will accept a session break on network transition.
- Enterprises can have "roaming" even within a single building where different
areas are within the responsibility of different system administrators. Identity
Management and authentication issues are typically handled by not requiring authentication
to use the network infrastructure but using a virtual private network (VPN) to control
access to systems and services. Session handover is an issue, however.
- It would be advantageous to liaise with the Liberty Alliance Project on federated
identity aspects of the Challenge.
It was agreed that the Challenge activity has produced a greater understanding of the
issues. The need now is to focus in the light of that knowledge.
