SOA Work Group Members' Meeting
Objective of Meeting
The aim of the meeting was to discuss:
- The Working Group's Roadmap and Strategy
- Liaisons with other bodies
- The SOA content of TOGAF
9
The meeting included a joint session with the Architecture
Forum.
Summary
The meeting reviewed the state of its work program, as described in
this section, and discussed how that work should proceed, as described
under Next Steps.
The SOA Work Group
is producing a set of standards and guides, including:
- An SOA Reference Architecture
- A practical guide to using TOGAF™ for SOA
- An SOA Governance Framework
- A Service-Oriented Infrastructure Reference Framework
- An ontology for SOA
The Work Group has also produced the first edition of the SOA
Source Book.
Drafts of the Governance Framework, the SOI Reference Framework, and
the Ontology are publicly available (see under Information – Project
Materials on the SOA Work Group web
page).
A final draft of the ontology has been prepared, and a final draft of
the Governance Framework is almost complete.
A draft describing the high-level aspects of the Reference
Architecture is nearly complete.
The Work Group supports the activity of The Open Group Board to
produce a standard maturity model for SOA (OSIMM). Work Group members
will assist this activity as it proceeds.
The first edition of the SOA Source Book is based on the discussions
in the Work Group projects and the OSIMM activity, and reflects the
informal consensus as of the end of 2008.
The SOA Work Group participates invaluable SOA harmonization
discussions with members of OASIS and the OMG.
TOGAF 9 includes a section on SOA. Because TOGAF 9 was prepared in
advance of any large body of output from the SOA Work Group, this
section does not reflect the Work Group's conclusions. It does not
contradict those conclusions, but it has a different emphasis and focus.
Outputs
This report, and the detailed minutes available to Working Group
members, constitute the output of the meeting.
Next Steps
The Governance Framework will be completed and submitted to Company
Review for publication as an Open Group standard.
The Ontology will be submitted to Company Review for publication as
an Open Group standard.
A public draft describing the high-level aspects of the Reference
Architecture will be prepared. Detailed building block descriptions will
then be added to produce a final draft that can proceed to Company
Review for publication as an Open Group standard.
Work will continue on other project deliverables (which are not so
close to completion).
A draft of the OSIMM will be prepared for Fast-Track Company Review
for publication as an Open Group standard.
(The Company Review and its Fast-Track variant are described in The
Open Group Standards Process.)
The Work Group aims to produce a second edition of the SOA Source
Book reflecting informal consensus as of the end of 2009, to be
published in April 2010.
The SOA harmonization activity with members of OASIS and the OMG will
continue.
The Work Group will produce a short document positioning SOA in
relation to TOGAF. This could replace the current SOA section of TOGAF
9. Alternatively, the Architecture Forum could decide that TOGAF should
be completely architecture- -neutral, and reference the document rather
than incorporating it.
