TOGAF Tutorial: Introduction to TOGAF™

Objective of Meeting

The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) is a comprehensive, industry standard framework and methodology for the design, evaluation, and implementation of enterprise architectures.

This tutorial, which was open to all participants at the Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conference at London, was given by Jason Uppall of QRS, Canada.

Preceding the European launch of the new edition of TOGAF – TOGAF 9 – on the following day, this tutorial gave a general introduction to The Open Group, and described what the Architecture Forum has achieved so far with the development of TOGAF up to TOGAF 8 "Enterprise Edition".

It thus provided an excellent foundation for the following day's presentations on TOGAF 9.

Summary

Within the architecture domain, The Open Group has been active for over a decade, developing and making freely available an architecture framework and methodology – TOGAF. Developed by The Open Group Architecture Forum, TOGAF is today accepted and used around the world as an industry standard framework and method for enterprise architecture.

TOGAF has been and continues to be evolved within The Open Group Architecture Forum. Its development has been guided by and based on the knowledge and experience of Open Group members who are practicing Architects working for a wide range of enterprises throughout the world.

This special pre-conference tutorial described the background to the evolution of TOGAF as a framework for developing architectures to meet the business needs of an organization, and its progression up to TOGAF 8 "Enterprise Edition", with the increasing realization within the industry of the importance of enterprise architecture in the development of information systems.

The tutorial described what the Architecture Forum has achieved so far in the development of TOGAF, and gave an overview of how the Forum is responding to new challenges with the ongoing development of TOGAF.

Outputs

Participants received an excellent overview of the TOGAF framework and its architecture development method, and the importance of The Open Group Architecture Forum in providing the development forum for TOGAF.

Next Steps

The tutorial was very well received, and will be repeated at future Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conferences, with detail of  the new edition of TOGAF – TOGAF 9. Additional tutorials, focusing on specific aspects of TOGAF 9, will also be included at future conferences.
