Semantic Interoperability (Open Meeting)

Objective of Meeting

The purpose of the meeting was to establish the role of The Open Group Semantic Interoperability Working Group, and to outline the steps to be taken so that the Working Group can fill this role.

Summary

The meeting discussed a draft charter for the Work Group (see the meeting agenda), including a mission statement and a set of proposed projects, and considered how to gain more visibility and traction for Semantic Interoperability, both within The Open Group and in the wider world.

It was agreed that the mission of the Semantic Interpretability Working Group is to further the use of Semantic Technology within the Enterprise. This will be accomplished by producing deliverables that prove Semantic Technology is real today.

The following topics were identified as appropriate for Semantic Interoperability Working Group projects. UDEF is an established project, which will continue. The others will be formally approved as projects once deliverables and project teams that can produce them are identified.

  • UDEF
  • Semantics and SOA
  • Vocabulary Management
  • Semantics and TOGAF
  • Semantic Interoperability Reference Model

Visibility and traction can be gained by linking Semantic Interoperability to SOA, which has emerged as a key driver for it. This would be a good reason to include Semantic Interoperability content in the program of The Open Group conference in Austin, Texas in July.

Outputs

Changes to the draft charter were agreed, and will result in a charter that can be put forward for adoption by The Open Group.

Next Steps

  • A charter, incorporating the changes discussed in the meeting, will be agreed by Working Group members.
  • Officers for the Working Group will be elected. The aim is to elect co-chairs by the Austin conference.
  • The charter will be discussed by The Open Group Board at their meeting during the Austin conference.
  • A call for participation in the proposed projects will be issued, with the aim of starting those projects at the Austin conference.
  • Inclusion of semantic content in the program of the Austin conference will be discussed with the conference team.
